Busy Breather Oxygen Carrying Backpack

At Fresh Air Medical Oxygen, we constantly hear about the challenges our customers face traveling with oxygen, carrying their portable oxygen system, and trying to maintain normal activities of daily living around an oxygen machine or tank. In fact, those challenges and frustrations were the reason we started our company! Today, we’re proud to share a story of success, optimism, and positivity that comes from a person who has made the lives of countless home oxygen users easier with her product.
Michelle Staley is a mom, wife, and entrepreneur who invented a bag to lug around oxygen equipment and supplies. Necessity was the mother of her invention, which she designed after finding out firsthand how challenging moving around with oxygen could be. As the mother of a “preemie,” Michelle found herself with a newborn that required oxygen, along with diapers, food, and supplies when traveling. Her son Ty weighed just 1 lb. 8 oz. at birth. Taking a newborn out into the world to go to a store, the doctor’s office, or out on a simple visit is not an easy venture. Taking out a child that also requires oxygen is even more difficult and cumbersome. Oxygen manufacturers make carriers to help transport their equipment around. However, the carrier systems on the market were unacceptable to Michelle, so after a few frustrating months of jockeying medical equipment everywhere she went, she came up with the Busy Breather Bag.
“When my son was born three months premature, his lungs were severely underdeveloped,” says Michelle. “After he spent four months in the neonatal intensive care unit, I was very excited to finally get my little boy home—but that happiness was overshadowed by fear about my baby being on oxygen for the next two years.”
“Five hundred thousand babies are born prematurely each year, and many of those babies will go home requiring oxygen tanks and equipment,” Michelle says. “In addition, millions of Americans with other health issues have to find the solution to carrying the oxygen equipment with them that sustains their life. BUSY BREATHERS is the better system to carry all of your oxygen and medical items in one convenient and attractive bag.”
Michelle’s great idea caught on, and she received some funding assistance from the Huggies® MomInspired™ Grant Program. Through tenacity and hard work, along with a passion that came from her own very personal experiences, Michelle was able to design and produce these bags—primarily designed for carrying tanks and portable liquid oxygen systems.
The business grew because of Michelle’s passion. Over the years, she has spoken to “parents of preemies” support groups, healthcare professionals, and the general public about not only her product, but about being a Mom and living day to day with these challenges. Besides building a business, she’s built a support network for countless people who face similar challenges. Along the way, she’s won awards for her product and business (including “Best New Tech Product, 2011” by Contemporary Pediatrics magazine), appeared on television and radio to promote the product, and even been a semi-finalist on ABC’s nationally televised SHARK TANK show.
“My son is responsible for the tenacity I have as a small business owner. The passion behind my company comes entirely from him[...]” says Michelle. Ty is eleven years old now and outgrew his need for supplemental oxygen over nine years ago, but Michelle continues to market her product and talk to groups of users.
FAM is proud to carry Michelle’s products on our website and happy to partner with such an inspiring person.
